SPT sets 'Angel' experiment

Series bound for DVD will see time online first

By Andrew Wallenstein

Sony Pictures Television will announce an online live-action project with veteran comic book writer Ed Brubaker at Comic-Con on Thursday.

Brubaker, whose credits include "The Death of Captain America" and "Criminal," has been enlisted to produce "Angel of Death," with Zoe Bell ("Death Proof") attached to star. The series will run live on Sony-owned video hub Crackle.com.

Together with White Rock Lake Prods., Sony is eyeing "Angel" as an experiment in introducing a new franchise to the DVD market by giving some of the content an online run beforehand. The production budget for 10 shortform episodes of the series is $1 million, which is on the high end for online.

"Angel" represents the first online programming that will live on Crackle.com that Sony will distribute. In addition to DVD, Sony will look to push "Angel" internationally in various TV formats.

"Angel" has Bell as an assassin who turns on the individuals who hire her when a head wound causes her to feel haunted by her victims.

The combination of Ed's sensibility and Zoe's talent is sure to keep loyalists and new viewers alike coming back for more," said Sean Carey, senior executive vp at Sony Pictures Television.
